Steps to take light trails with a smartphone

Step #1

Keep your phone steady. You can use a tripod or you can find a surface that is rigid enough to keep the phone steady throughout the photography process.

Step #2

Open the Camera app and locate to Manual or Pro mode. Different phones have different names for manual mode. You can search for your phone on google if you are facing any issue finding the manual mode.

Step #3

Decrease the ISO as low as possible. The majority of Smartphones offer 100 ISO to be the lowest but in some high-end phones, you do get as low as 50 ISO. Lower the ISO sharper will be the photo. You can learn the basics by clicking here. In my case(LG G8X), it's 50 ISO to be the lowest.

Step #4

Lower the Shutter speed. This means, increase the seconds showed ( 1/125s to 5s) under the shutter speed section. The Shutter speed(Seconds selection) will depend upon the photo which you want to take. If you want to capture a photo over the bridge then you might need to have a shutter speed of more than 8s in order to capture light trails of multiple cars or bikes.
You can play with white balance while capturing the photo, you will get different results with different white balance

Step #5

Do not forget to edit photos. I always recommend everyone to edit photos because no photo is perfect before we make it perfect. You can check the best apps for editing photos which I personally use.

Pro Tip:- Always take multiple shots because you may or may not get the perfect shot with one click.
