#2:-Some Technical Secrets of Aperture in "Phone Photography"

Have you ever thought “Why and How we get Bokeh or Blur effect in photos?” If “NO”, Then I’m here to explain about the term called “Aperture” in this post.
Aperture

First of all, "What is Aperture?"
Aperture Definition:-” It’s an opening hole through which light travels in Phone or camera sensor”.
It may range from 2.0 to 2.2 in normal phones. In some flagship phones like the Samsung S9+, we do have manual control over Aperture. There are two options provided f1.5 and f2.4.In a later post, I will clear about these two Aperture provisions.

Now, We are clear about the Definition of Aperture. We all have heard about lots of Aperture sizes likes f1.9,f2.0,f2.2 etc But do they really have any role or just for making Fool? The answer is “YES” they do have a role. Lets categories this into two parts.


1)Role of Big Apertures (f1.5,f1.7 etc)

You would have seen the advertisement of S9+, Where they were showing the night photography capability of S9+.So, What is the reason behind its capability? The Answer is “f1.5’.Due to this, it is capable of capturing Lots of Light even at night. Since the Aperture opening is More when f value is lower. We can understand this concept with an example
 "We all have seen “Water Pipes”, there are different diameter sized of Pipes available in the market. Some are with a bigger diameter and some with a smaller diameter. The place where a large amount of “Water Flow” is required, we use Bigger Diameter pipes and similarly, for “Lower Water Flow” Smaller Pipes are used"
If we compare this example with our Aperture then,
(Aperture=Diameter of Pipe) and (Light=Water Flow)
Bigger the Hole Opening(Lower value of f) more amount of Light would enter through it. That’s why in Photography, Lower value of 'f' is better for “Night Photography”.

The lower value of f is not only good for Night Photography. It’s very good if we want to Capture Landscape Photo because its gonna focus infinite area, That’s why Photographer uses a lower value of f in those places where they want to capture “Both object and Background” clearly. Therefore the cost of Large Aperture(smaller f value) lens are costly and that's why they are found only in Flagship phones only.

"In simple words ,If we don’t want Bokeh or Blurry Background then we use a lower value of f or Maximum Aperture".


2)Role of Small Apertures (f2.0,f2.2,f2.4)

These values of f are very common in Mid range or Lower range Phones. Nowadays, We are having an extra lens or sensor in phones for Bokeh effect. Have you ever seen their f values? They are f2.0,f2.2,f2.4 etc because Higher the value of 'f' More is the Bokeh effect. But, How it creates Blurry Background?
Larger the value of f means Smaller Hole Opening. Due to this reason, Only some portion of the Object will be in “Focus” and the remaining would be “Out of Focus”. That “Out of Focus” is nothing but Our Blurry Background or Bokeh Effect.

But, Larger Aperture values have a Side Effect. In Nighttime it gives a poor performance as we increase the f values because the larger value of f means smaller hole opening and lesser light would enter. Due to this reason, Lower f values are preferred over Large value of f during night photography. The price of Small Aperture is also low compared to large Aperture due to this reason, In mid and low budget range smartphones we have small aperture provided. So, what to do, If a person is having a Small Aperture sensor in its smartphone. Guys, we can resolve this issue by Increasing the ISO and Shutter time. I hope now you are clear about both things(Large and Small Aperture). Due to their working capabilities, Samsung has two aperture values f1.5 and f2.4 in S9 and S9+.
